Voyages of the Great Explorers - Special Captains

  Captain Reidulf Maalen
Captain Reidulf Maalen, our own "Modern Day Explorer", will join us for the start of our inaugural chapter and all three voyages of The Viking Sagas. Captain Maalen’s love for the sea was born on the island of Tustna where his family’s farm overlooked one of Norway’s busiest shipping lanes. At fifteen, he landed his first job on a Norwegian freighter. In the ensuing years, he worked for such prestigious cruise lines as Royal Viking Line and Crystal Cruises. We’re delighted to welcome Captain Maalen to the helm of the Spirit of Oceanus. He has navigated the world many times over.

  Captain Malcolm Scanlan
Captain Scanlan completed his pre-sea training at the University of Southampton, joining his first ship as an apprentice in 1963. After obtaining his Master’s License in 1975, he served as Chief Officer on Cunard ships including the QE2 during the 1982 Falkland Island Campaign. After several years on freighters, he returned to passenger ships in 1991, first with Royal Caribbean and then on smaller, more traditional ships like the Semester at Sea vessel Universe Explorer, which sailed worldwide with university students. He first captained the Spirit of Oceanus in 2001 and says that of all the vessels he’s worked on, it has been the most exciting.

  Captain Boris Tsvetkov
Captain Tsvetkov was born on Sakhalin Island in Russia’s Far East just north of Japan. He followed in his uncle’s footsteps and attended Leningrad Marine Academy, subsequently receiving his Bachelor’s degree in Marine Transportation and his Officer’s License. Following his graduation, Tsvetkov served eight years on the Marine Academy’s training ships and then 11 years on container ships before moving to passenger ships, which he has sailed since 1998. Captain Tsvetkov first took charge of the Spirit of Oceanus in 2002 and he has been its dedicated captain since 2005.
