Drive through the park and enjoy spectacular views along the 27-mile scenic Park Loop Road. Pause at Thunder Hole and the summit of Cadillac Mountain for superb views and photos. Marvel at the craggy coastline, crashing waves and surrounding granite mountains. Return to Bar Harbor, and enjoy this afternoon exploring this classic New England village.
| Day 05 | Portsmouth, New Hampshire, United States September 25, 2010 This morning explore historic Portsmouth, once one of the nation’s busiest seaports. Settled in 1623, Portsmouth was Paul Revere’s destination in 1774 when he rode to announce the British were coming. Take a guided walking to explore its many historic sites, buildings and museums, especially at Strawbery Banke. Named after the earliest Portsmouth settlement, Strawbery Banke preserves New Hampshire buildings from four centuries in its 9.5-acre, open-air museum. Each building shows a slice of life from a bygone era. Enjoy a guided tour of Newport from its colonial days through the “Gilded Age” to the present. Pass through the historic district with its fine examples of Colonial, Federal, and Victorian homes, many of which are on the National Historic Register. Watch for Trinity Church, Redwood Library, and the Gothic Church of Saint Mary's, where Jacqueline Bouvier married Senator John F. Kennedy. This afternoon, tour Ocean Drive and the Bellevue Avenue area with its famous mansions, the “summer cottages” of the country’s elite in the early 1900s. Enjoy a guided tour through the largest of these magnificent estates, The Breakers. Built by Cornelius Vanderbilt in 1895, the mansion was designed by noted architect Richard Morris Hunt. Arrive in Yorktown, founded 1634. Yorktown, Jamestown and Williamsburg form the Historic Triangle of Colonial Virginia. Here some of early America’s most famous settlements preserve over 400 years of history. This morning visit Jamestown, the first permanent English settlement established in 1607. Start at the Visitor Center to see interpretive exhibits and a multi-media presentation about America’s Birthplace. Take a walking tour with a park ranger to see and learn about this historic site. Watch as archaeologists continue to unearth the 1607 James Fort site and view their discoveries in the Voorhees Archaearium museum. Tour the original 17th-century church tower and reconstructed Jamestown Memorial Church. Explore New Towne where the settlement grew beyond the fort walls. Watch colonial-garbed glassblowers demonstrate America’s first industry at the Glasshouse.
This afternoon explore Colonial Williamsburg, England’s seat of power in North America from 1699 to 1780. Here George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry and other Virginia patriots established the ideals – liberty, independence and personal freedom – that influenced the founding of our nation. Experience everyday life in Williamsburg against the backdrop of historic events in the new Revolutionary City program. Enjoy a special, behind-the-scenes tour of the Middleton House, furnished with family heirlooms. Marvel at the historic furniture, paintings, china, silver, 18th -century clothing – and an original copy of the Declaration of Independence signed by Arthur Middleton. This afternoon experience Charleston by horse-drawn carriage. This afternoon explore Savannah on your own. | Day 13 | Canaveral Harbor, Florida, United States October 3, 2010 This afternoon visit the Kennedy Space Center, birthplace of America’s space program. The center chronicles NASA’s achievements from the first rockets of the 1950's to the space pioneers of the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo programs, the Space Shuttle and construction of the International Space Station. Here man launched into space to first land on the Moon in 1969. Arrive at the Debus Conference Facility, named for Dr. Kurt H. Debus, director of the center during such highlights as John Glenn's first orbital flight, Neil Armstrong's moonwalk on Tranquility Base and the safe return of the Apollo 13 crew. Enjoy an exclusive lunch with a current astronaut, learn about space exploration and have the opportunity to ask questions.
Tour the Rocket Garden and take the new Space Shuttle Launch Experience, a simulated journey into space.
