Dr. Jay Parini
Dr. Jay Parini is a noted biographer, novelist, poet and professor of American literature. His nonfiction works include biographies of John Steinbeck, Robert Frost and William Faulkner. During the cruise, Dr. Parini lectures on the life and work of John Steinbeck, based on his well-known book John Steinbeck: A Biography (1995). He explores Steinbeck's six-week scientific journey to the Sea of Cortez in 1940 with marine biologist Ed Ricketts, documented in Steinbeck’s The Log from the Sea of Cortez, one of his most interesting if lesser known books.

Dr. Parini has been Axinn Professor of English and American Literature and Director of Creative Writing at Middlebury College in Vermont since 1982. Prior, he taught at Dartmouth College from 1975 to 1982. He has also taught, as a visiting professor, at Christ Church, Oxford and the University of London. Originally from the coal mining region of Pennsylvania, Dr. Parini earned degrees from Lafayette College (A.B. 1970; LL.D., 1997) and the University of St. Andrews, Scotland (B.Phil, 1972, Ph.D. 1975). .

Rich Kirchner
Rich Kirchner is an experienced naturalist and professional wildlife photographer who has worked in places around the globe ranging from Baja to Antarctica and the Arctic. His love for the wild and its creatures inspire his lectures on whales, sea birds and other Baja wildlife as well as nature photography.

Kirchner has been a professional wildlife photographer for 26 years. His images have appeared in such publications as National and International Wildlife, Audubon, Ranger Rick, BBC Wildlife, Natural History, Geo Germany, Geo France and Nature’s Best, as well as hundreds of books.

Originally from western New York State, Kirchner has lived in Bozeman, Montana since 1973. He has traveled to such diverse places as Africa, Alaska, the Amazon, Costa Rica and Svalbard, Norway. Working for the U.S. Antarctic program, he spent 21 months at McMurdo Station, South Pole..
