Cruise West BlogThe Jungfrau, A Six Year Old Boy and A Bikini!May 18, 2010 at 11:31 AM by Site I will never forget visiting Grindelwald and Interlaken in the Swiss Alps with regions where cars were not allowed and only bike paths were used. The meticulously kept homes with flower boxes and perfectly kept yards and farms. We took the surreal Jungfraujoch Railway, famous for traveling up inside the Eiger and Mönch mountain peaks, through deep tunnels with multiple observation points. Imagine my surprise stepping off the rail car, walking out of a deep mountain cave and seeing a woman lying on a rock in her bikini surrounded by snow and ice at 13,000 ft! It was summer, it was hot, I stood on my first glacier a the top of the Alps! At that age I was amazed by everything from the hot chocolate I was served, to the funny looking toilets, let alone a train that took me to the top of the Bernese Alps. What I will never forget is the sun setting each day behind the mountains and how awe-inspiring that was. One afternoon we heard a stunning clap of thunder, very odd, as there was not a cloud in the sky! It startled me to the core. It turned out to be a massive chunk of rock falling off the mountain. The "thunder" echoed through the valley for several minutes, it was amazing! My mother, brother and I explored WWII ruins and Hitler’s secret hideout in Bavaria, the “Eagles Nest”. I was exposed to different languages and the realization the world was a lot larger than I would have ever imagined and far more beautiful. The best part about traveling through Europe was watching the "Sound of Music" some months later while at home, and recognizing Salzburg and the surrounding mountains, then going to school the next day and saying, “yhea I was there!” They say a child’s mind is like a sponge and I would agree!
